Even if I don't get around to seeing all the films nominated, I'm a bit of a sucker for the Oscars and Oscar predictions.
Nominee lists and predictions:
Best Picture
-
Avatar
District 9
The Blind Side
An Education
Up
Up In the Air
Precious
A Serious Man
Inglourious Basterds
The Hurt Locker
Who Will Win — My guess is for The Hurt Locker. District 9's surprising inclusion may split the sci-fi vote, hurting Avatar's chances. Precious and Up In the Air were solid films, but their buzz died down pretty fast (and may only have existed because of their limited release schedule), while The Hurt Locker's has been building in the past few months long after its release.
GTFOutta here, The Blind Side.
Who Should Win — Again, The Hurt Locker. This movie has legs, thanks to Kathryn Bigalow's DGA win, and that's probably all it needed to put her over the top. Plus, it's tied for overall nominations with Avatar, giving it nomination cred.
Best Director
-
Kathryn Bigalow, The Hurt Locker
Jason Reitman, Up in the Air
James Cameron, Avatar
Lee Daniels, Precious
Quentin Tarantino, Inglourious Basterds
Who Will Win — Bigalow. A woman needs it, a woman will get it. For a more than deserving movie.
Who Should Win — Bigalow. If Reitman didn't win for Juno, he won't win for this. Daniels, eh. The daydreaming sequences were weird, and the movie felt vaguely manipulative. Tarantino ... his film didn't scream Oscar to me. If he didn't win for Pulp Fiction, he won't win for an almost comical Nazi revenge flick.
And fuck James Cameron. Any Oscars Avatar gets belong to his special effects/editing team.
Best Actor
-
Morgan Freeman, Invictus
Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart
Colin Firth, A Single Man
Jeremy Renner, The Hurt Locker
George Clooney, Up In the Air
Who Will Win — Bridges. He's owed some sort of award, and giving him one for this role will make up for Mickey Rourke not getting his for The Wrestler. Renner is the other possibility.
Who Should Win — Firth. An underdog for sure, but he said more without saying anything most of the time in A Single Man. George Clooney played himself essentially, no chance. Freeman was a freebie.
Best Actress
-
Carey Mulligan, An Education
Sandra Bullock ,The Blind Side
Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia
Helen Mirren, The Last Station
Gabourey Sidibe, Precious
Who Will Win — I'm remiss to say, but it could be Bullock. Which, as much as I love Miss Congeniality, makes me want to barf. Just hearing her bad southern accent in commercials was enough to turn me off from ever paying $10 to hear it for 2 hours. This may happen since Sidibe and Mulligan will split the young newcomer vote.
Who Should Win — Again, either Sidibe or Mulligan. Meryl was great as Julia Child, but unfortunately was stuck in between scenes of an insufferable Julie Powell. Mirren doesn't have much buzz.
Best Supporting Actor
-
Stanley Tucci, The Lovely Bones
Matt Damon,
Christoph Waltz , Inglourious Basterds
Woody Harrelson, The Messenger
Christopher Plummer, The Last Station
Who Will Win — Waltz.
Who Should Win — Waltz. Completely. Tucci no doubt was a scary creeper, but stuck in a mess of a movie. Not enough buzz for Plummer or Harrelson, and this, like Freeman's, is a freebie nomination for Damon. A filler nom.
Best Supporting Actress
-
Penélope Cruz , Nine
Mo'Nique, Precious
Vera Farmiga, Up In the Air
Maggie Gyllenhaal, Crazy Heart
Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air
Who Will Win — Mo'Nique. No contest.
Who Should Win — Everything I've seen Vera Farmiga in, I've enjoyed (Joshua, Orphan, Up In the Air), and it would be nice to see her recognized. I enjoyed her movie more than Mo'Nique's as well.
I wish Mélanie Laurent had gotten a nomination though, oh my God.
Best Animated Feature
-
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Up
Coraline
The Princess and The Frog
The Secret of Kells
Who Will Win — Up. I thought after Wall-E Pixar couldn't get any more emotionally manipulative, but I was wrong.
Who Should Win — I have a soft spot in my heart for both Fantastic Mr. Fox and Coraline, and I'm tired of computerized, CGI knocking out stop-motion animated films. I wish Coraline could take it.
