Warning: Spoliers below the fold.
Well, that was uncomfortable.
Despite all the hype and talk around this one, I don't have much to say. It was a well-acted downer, from start to finish. Gabby Sidibe and Mo’Nique are great in a horribly depressing way. Mariah Carey was good too, although I think she didn't really need to add a friggin' mustache to her uglified look. We get it. You're actually pretty IRL, but now you are playing a normal, so you are fuggo. Okay. Yes.
I felt, despite the apparent happy ending, that Precious was doomed. We just saw her go though so much fucked up shit, I can't believe that she'll have a fairy tale existence from here on out. I don't think that's an unusual feeling to take away from it. Joe got more of a sense of optimism from the ending (due to Precious getting both her kids back, improving her literacy and math skills, and getting the answers she wanted from her mother) but I really don't see it. She's still got huge hurdles to leap, and I'm not sure she can do it.
This is one of those Oscar movies I get really jazzed up to see, and generally enjoy while in I'm watching the theater (as much as someone can enjoy a movie like this, I guess), but afterwards? It's not something I would want to see again. Mission accomplished, Oscar-bait.
Also, I refuse to use the full title of the movie. That's too damn much. Just subtitle it please!
