Movie Review: It's Complicated

Warning: Spoliers below the fold.

I've already failed at one of my resolutions. (Blog more.) Maybe if I review all the movies I've seen since my last movie review post (which includes Up In The Air, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Precious, Youth In Revolt, and now, It's Complicated) I'll feel less bad about it.

So anyway. It's Complicated. A movie littered with rich, white people problems. Meaning, no actual real problems. Let's live vicariously through their plight, shall we?

1) Holy crap, how nice was Meryl Streep's character's kitchen? Almost every shot that featured the kitchen was framed to highlight its fabulousness. She had a four chair island, a pedestal cake plate, and a huge stainless steel refrigerator. When they explained what she wanted in her remodel, I took her comment of, "Finally a kitchen I can cook in!" to be pretty ridiculous. She was easily making four course meals already, jeez. (And she had a full fucking garden! No doubt where she gets all her ingredients for all her culinary masterpieces in her totally shit kitchen.)

2) But I do get that this kitchen remodel was something she wanted and was finally able to do after gaining her independence and, as she put it a few times, "finally feeling normal" after the divorce. So, yay?

3) John Krasinski was cute, yet oddly inserted into the main family dynamic. Also, he was super effeminate in a confusing way.

4) The three children annoyed me. They were so precious and perfect, when they got upset after finding out about Jane and Jake's affair I wanted to slap them all. "I love when we have the whole family together!" ... just as long as there's no chance of you and Dad potentially being "You and Dad" again. WEIRDOS.

5) All the food looked delicious in this movie.

6) However, this movie felt like it was an hour too long.

7) Alec Baldwin's Jake was totally manipulating Jane the whole time during the affair. Jane mentions he's a lawyer, and that makes perfect sense. Although Jane's therapist tells her that this fling may be good for her, she was still a) not sleeping, b) hiding it from her family and others and c) expressing guilt about it. But, he continued to pressure her until she would relent. Jerk!

8) Steve Martin was perfectly adequate in this. His role could have been played by anyone (of the appropriate age), if it didn't require that he do that wacky dance at the party.

I actually didn't hate the movie despite all these complaints.
